A woman is dead following a fiery crash with a trash truck on the New York Thruway in Yonkers.
The crash, which occurred shortly after 5 a.m., caused the northbound lanes of the Thruway to be closed for at least two hours.
According to initial reports the woman’s car was crushed between the tractor-trailer hauling trash from Brooklyn to Peekskill, and a concrete median near the Cross County Shopping Center. The woman’s car burst into flames upon impact. Authorities are unsure if she died as result of the crash or the fire.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident. One witness told police they saw the truck parked on the shoulder and was backing up just moments before the accident.
The truck driver was also injured and taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
