Afghan Government Agrees to Truce with Taliban Insurgents in Northwest Province of Badghis

The Afghan government has reportedly agreed to a truce with Taliban militants operating in the northwest province of Badghis, a move made to ensure safety during next month’s scheduled elections.

As part of the truce Taliban insurgents have agreed not to attack polling stations and will hand key areas over to the government. According to the Afghan government they will attempt to implement further truce agreements in other provinces before the Aug. 20 vote.

While the ceasefire is being hailed as a major step forward in the peace process the province of Badghis has seen relatively little violence over the past several months. The same cannot be said for other provinces in the country as militants have stepped up their attacks against foreign troops in hopes of disrupting the election process.
