U.S. and China Leaders Meet in Washington to Discuss Economic and Political Differences

In an attempt to ease concerns over economic and political differences leaders of the U.S. and China are meeting in Washington to engage in negotiations that may help stabilize their relationship.

The Strategic and Economic Dialogue was opened by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and she expressed that the two countries were in the process of “laying brick by brick the foundation of a stronger relationship.”

That relationship has been tenuous of late as China continues to express concern over the value of the U.S. dollar and the recent stimulus plan pushed through by President Barack Obama. China owns a significant amount of the U.S. debt and fears that stimulus plan will only further devalue the dollar through inflation.

While China wants the U.S. to hold inflation in check the United States has several concerns of their own in regards to China’s economic policies. There have been accusations that China has intentionally devalued its currency to make their exports appear cheaper and have long made it difficult for imports to compete within their country.

Both sides have accused the other of trade protectionism and that will almost certainly be a focus during the meetings in Washington.

In addition to addressing the issues between them, the U.S. and China will also try to come to an understanding concerning the North Korean nuclear program as well as climate change and clean energy.
