Dance Icon Merce Cunningham Dies at 90

Merce Cunningham, widely recognized as the man who revolutionized modern dance, has died at the age of 90. According to a statement released by the Cunningham Dance Foundation the famed dancer and choreographer “died peacefully in his home of natural causes.”

Cunningham formed the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation in 1953 and over the years was credited with recreating the way in which performing and visual arts could be presented and interpreted. Addressing that new approach to the arts Judith Fishman, chairman of the Cunningham Dance Foundation, further expressed in the statement that Merce did it not for fame but, “for the beauty and wonder that lay in exploring new possibilities.”

In 1985 Cunningham received the Kennedy Center Honors and that was followed by a long list of honors and awards that included the National Medal of Arts and the Porselli Prize in 1990, the Medal of Honor from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and induction into the Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Dance in 1993.
