A massive avalanche buried more than 100 people Saturday morning in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. Authorities say about 70 feet of snow and rock fell from the Siachen Glacier and buried a military outpost in the Gayari sector. At least 139 people are believed to be trapped in the avalanche.
Rescue teams used bulldozers and other heavy equipment to look for survivors on Sunday, but so far no one has been found. Officials say poor weather is complicating the rescue operation.
"It's a very massive scale slide. They are under the slide, but we haven't lost hope. The rescue work is on, and we are keeping our fingers crossed,” Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said over the weekend.
The missing reportedly includes at least 124 soldiers and 11 civilians.
