New Heavy Weight Champion of the World Shannon Briggs wins by TKO at 2:59 mark of 12th Round over Russian Champ Sergie Liakovich
Shannon Briggs waited until the 12th Round to knock Sergei Liakhovich through the ring onto thr scorers table to win by TKO and become the new Heavyweight Champion of the World. Sergie Liakovich the Russian Heavyweight who lost his belt was leading 106-103 on 2 cards and 105-104 on the third card going into the 12th round. Briggs' corner told him prior to the 12th he was behind and needed a knockout and he delivered. Brigss came out in the 12th and looked for an opening and seized the moment knocking Sergie down with 26 seconds in the 12th and sending him through the ropes for the TKO at the 2:59 mark of the final round. Briggs from Brooklyn, N.Y. like former heavyweight Champ Mile Tyson came back to win what was an extremely boring fight up until the final round to regain the Heavyweight Title that he won over Foreman and lost to Lewis.
While Jim Gray and Don King disagreed on Showtime that the fight was boring according to Gray while King said it was a great fight neither one was wrong or right. The fight was both boring and great, in moments. If you were to watch the replay you would only need to watch round 1 and round 12, Gray was right about the other 10 rounds they were extremely boring. The crowd in Phoenix was sure to voice their displeasure booing repeatedly throughout the fight in hopes of stirring the fighter to fight.
The first round Brigss came out and had many on the edge of their seat thinking that Briggs 34 may come through with an early knockout, instead we had to wait 10 more rounds for anything to happen. Briggs may have been playing his own version of roper dope the way Ali did against Foreman, but it's doubtful. The 2 boxers were exhausted after the fight came to an end with the TKO. Sergei sat on the scores table with his feet dangling under the ring while Briggs sat on his stool in his corner too tired to celebrate.
Don King and Briggs are off to Vegas to spend some money on jewelry according to King.
