With the odds stacked against him, and his movie playing in only 837 theaters, Borat learned that Americans love an underdog. Apparently they love an underdog more than they love Santa.
Despite playing in just under a quarter of the theaters that showed “The Santa Clause 3”, “Borat” brought in $26.4 million over its debut weekend. That was $6 million more than its closest competitor, the man from the North Pole.
So maybe it’s not an underdog that Americans love, maybe it’s just a sexist, anti-Semetic, pro-incest candidate their looking for to get them through Election Day. Whatever the reason Sacha Baron Cohen knew what he was doing. Borat is expected to hit an additional 2,000 theaters by next weekend.
Paramount’s “Flushed Away” grabbed third at the weekend box-office with $19.1 million. The animated flick has received high reviews and should have a solid holiday performance.
Hanging around the leaders was “Saw III” which brought in $15.5 million and has now totaled $60.1 million overall.
Martin Scorsese managed to keep his presence felt at the box-office. His movie “The Departed” brought in $8 million to bring its five week total to $102.3 million.
