Authorities in India say a 22-year-old first time father will be charged with murder in the death of his 3-month-old daughter Afreen. Police say Umar Farooq beat and burned his daughter because he wanted a son. He was arrested on Sunday and initially faced charges of attempted murder, but he will now be charged with murder since Afreen died on Wednesday.
Afreen was rushed to Vani Vilas Hospital on Sunday with a dislocated neck, bite marks and burns on her head. She suffered multiple convulsions on Wednesday before passing away of cardiac arrest. "We are sad to announce that Baby Afreen suffered a cardiac arrest at 10:40am [06:10GMT], we tried resuscitating her for half an hour, but unfortunately we couldn't save her," Professor R. Premalatha told reporters.
Earlier this week Afreen’s mother, 19-year-old Reshma Banu, asked for help with her case from the Bangalore Child Welfare Committee. "I want him to be punished. He has tortured my baby. I am first waiting for Afreen to recover and then we'll think about the divorce," she said.
