Two earthquakes struck in the Gulf of California early Thursday, shaking buildings in Mexico and Arizona. The U.S. Geological Survey reports both earthquakes were centered about 85 miles northeast of Guerrero Negro, Baja California. They struck within 10 minutes of each other at a depth of less than 6 miles. The first tremor was a 6.9 magnitude and the second was a 6.2 magnitude.
Mexican authorities say no major damage has been reported. Residents in Arizona also reported feeling the earthquakes, but American authorities have not reported damages there either.
The tremors come one day after two massive earthquakes struck off the coast of Indonesia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued tsunami watches for the entire Indian Ocean, but both watches were lifted several hours later when waves of no more than 4 feet were reported in coastal areas.
