Drug Rehab Trends Changing In Delaware

Prescription drugs now replace heroin as one of the primary drugs of abuse in Delaware.

Because of its location and reputation as a major drug trafficking area, Delaware has been a hot bed for hard drug abuse for many years. Heroin, a drug readily available throughout Delaware, has reached people from all socio-economic backgrounds in the state.   This drug continues to destroy the lives of many who don’t end up getting help through drug rehab.

Over the last few years ,the Delaware drug trends have changed  making prescription drugs the most abused drugs in the state, surpassing the abuse of heroin, crack-cocaine and methamphetamine combined.  The number of current investigations throughout the state on prescription drug abuse and more specifically the abuse of prescription pain medications such as Percocet®, Percodan®, Tylox® and Roxicet®continues to rise.

Ramsy Darwish, an ex-pain pill addict who lived near Delaware at the time of his addiction, says that many addicts he knew from the area would start out taking pain pills and then move on to heroin.  Nowadays with the increased availability of prescription pain medications, it is easier and cheaper to continue to abuse prescriptions. Darwish, who through a family intervention, was lucky enough to end up at the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. After completing the Narconon program, he was able to successfully recover from prescription pain medication addiction and has been stably off drugs for several years.

The Narconon program differs from other treatment approaches principally in their use of drug- free withdrawal, and sauna detoxification as key agents of change. Many times an individual seeking drug treatment is in a state of poor overall health due to drug and alcohol abuse. The sauna detoxification used through Narconon not only restores their health, but also helps to eliminate drug toxins from the fatty tissues, and reduce physical drug cravings. Narconon also offers life skills therapy to clients to handle the underlying mental and emotional issues associated with drug abuse and achieves a more than 70% success rate for permanent sobriety.

With more than 8% of the population of Delaware abusing drugs, and a good percentage abusing prescriptions, the state has to implement more effective drug rehab methods for the increasing number of prescription addicts.
