Prescription Drug Addiction Can Cause Permanent Sleep, Not Always Temporary Relief

Narconon Trois-Rivieres Urges People to Educate themselves

Trois-Rivières, Quebec – Many drug users are unaware of the actual effects of many prescription drugs used today.  One of the primary concerns is prescription medication that is abused.  The majority of these drugs were developed for specific reasons and many of the long-term side effects are not generally known. What will these drugs actually do to a person when not taken as prescribed, or when used improperly, is where the concern lies.  One particular drug that has made recent headlines is called Diprivan, or Propofol, its generic name.  Diprivan is used to start or maintain anaesthesia during certain operations.  Unfortunately, it is really unknown how the drug actually works, but can include some side effects as, change in mood, dizziness, drowsiness, and loss of co-ordination.  The abuse of the drug is normally reported among medical and clinical staff that has access to it.

Propofol is a short acting intravenous sedative that has been approved for use in more than fifty different countries around the world.  It was originally developed in 1977 by Imperial Chemical Industries, but was withdrawn due to allergic reactions.  It was then later re-launched in 1986 by Astra Zeneca under the brand name Diprivan.  When the drug is abused, typically it is used for its sedative, and euphoric effect, and is also used as a sleep aid.  Most doctors have never heard of it being used to treat sleep disorders, and it was never approved for that purpose.  The drug does not provide any pain relief, and there are many risks involved when it’s used improperly.  When taken, breathing slows down, and if not monitored by trained professionals the person under the influence of the drug is at risk.

The Narconon drug rehab program urges people to educate themselves about all the possible effects prescription drugs can create, and to only take prescribed medication as directed by your doctor.  Be aware of its abuse, as it is very easy for anyone to fall into.  For more information about prescription drug abuse visit the Narconon drug rehab website at, http://narconon.ca/, or call 1-877-782-7409.
