New Jersey Mayor Saves Neighbor From Burning Home

Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker was treated for second degree burns and smoke inhalation last night after rescuing his neighbor from her burning home. The woman, who has not been identified, is currently hospitalized for second degree burns on her upper body. She is in stable condition.

Booker, 43, says he came home from a TV interview to find his neighbor’s home on fire and a woman screaming that her daughter was trapped inside. He immediately broke away from his security team and ran inside the house with a police detective who saved three people from the fire before Booker’s arrival. Booker found the woman in an upstairs bedroom and carried her outside.

“I did not feel bravery, I felt terror. It was a very scary moment. I couldn’t breathe. It was a moment I felt very religious,” he said.

Booker tweeted about the incident Friday. "Thanks 2 all who are concerned. Just suffering smoke inhalation. We got the woman out of the house. We are both off to hospital. I will b ok," he wrote.
