Senate Judiciary Committee Votes in Favor of Supreme Court Nomination for Sonia Sotomayor

The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted 13-6 in favor of the Supreme Court nomination of Sonia Sotomayor, paving the way for her to become the first Hispanic justice in a full Senate vote next week.

Tuesday’s result was widely expected as the 55-year-old Sotomayor has had the backing of the Democrat-led committee and she managed to capture the vote of one Republican, Lindsey Graham. All six votes against her nomination came from eth remaining Republicans on the committee who claimed Sotomayor was too liberal for the lifetime appointment.

With her expected confirmation next week Sotomayor will replace Justice David Souter who is retiring from the bench.
