Iran Releases More than 100 Demonstrators Detained During Recent Protests

Iranian authorities have released about 140 protesters who had been arrested for taking part in demonstrations against the results of last month’s presidential elections.

According to the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, “Those who were released had committed lighter offenses.” There are still about 200 others who remain behind bars, facing more serious charges.

That figure is what has been represented by the government while opposition members have suggested that those imprisoned due to the unrest numbers in the thousands.

Iran’s government has been facing serious pressure from the international community regarding the aftermath of last month’s elections. Shortly after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner thousands of protesters took to the streets, leading to several days of clashes with police and security personnel.

Those clashes led to at least 30 deaths, several hundred injuries and mass arrests.
