Pakistan School Attack Leaves 1 Child Dead, 2 Wounded

Pakistani police say one child died and two others were wounded Monday when their school was attacked by a lone militant. The attacker threw a hand grenade as he passed the Iqra Public School just outside of Peshawar. The grenade exploded by a group of children washing their hands at a water spout.

A police official said one 6-year-old boy died. Two second graders were wounded and are in serious condition.

"The child that was lost today wasn't one family's child but the entire nation's child. We will continue our fight against evildoers,” Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province education minister Sardar Babuk said.

The attack comes one day after Taliban militants broke nearly 400 inmates out of a jail in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa city of Bannu. Authorities say 384 of the 944 inmates escaped during the two hour attack in which militants blocked off access to the jail and fired rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47 rifles. Senior Bannu police official Iftikhar Khan reported four prison guards were wounded. There have been no reports of causalities.
