Search Continues for Missing Haitians Following Boat Disaster Off Turks and Caicos Islands

Search and rescue crews have continued to try and locate nearly 70 Haitian migrants who remain missing after the boat they were traveling in was destroyed by strong waves off the coast Turks and Caicos on Monday.

According to reports the boat, carrying about 200 migrants fleeing Haiti, struck a reef and then shattered after being pounded by large swells. More than 100 were rescued from the water while another 15 bodies were recovered, leaving rescue crews with about 70 people unaccounted for.

The U.S Coast Guard was aiding in the search for those missing but hopes of finding any survivors at sea have continued to lessen as the hours pass.

For those who did survive the accident and were pulled to safety Turks and Caicos has already begun the process of sending them back to Haiti.
