After six years as the Defense Secretary under George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld is resigning. Former head of the CIA, Robert Gates, will replace Rumsfeld.
The announcement comes on the heels of Tuesday’s election results which saw the Republicans lose control of the House.
Rumsfeld has been targeted by both the media and the American public for his actions and philosophy concerning the war in Iraq. While President Bush had repeatedly stated that Rumsfeld would remain as Defense Secretary until the end of his presidential term, Rumsfeld decided he would step down.
The 74-year-old Rumsfeld had previously served as Defense Secretary under President Gerald Ford.
As for Rumsfeld’s replacement, Robert Gates is expected to fill the position. The former head of the CIA must have his nomination confirmed by the Senate before it becomes official.
Gates served as CIA director for the elder Bush during his presidency from 1991 thru 1993.
