Group health insurance plans
in Florida always are appealing because they offer more for less. The group
dynamic gets the credit, with employers bearing some of the cost of policy premiums
that are discounted to begin with because of workforce volume.
Still, the resulting pretty-good deals are not good enough for some employees.
GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE ANALYSIS
According to Kaiser Permanente Insurance, nearly 20 percent of employees across the U.S. declined workplace coverage in 2011. Any number of reasons are given for the refusal to sign up for employee coverage, some of the reasons are quite legitimate, such as an employee being covered under the group health insurance policy of a spouse at another company.
Others decline because they are young. While is not true that young adults do not need health insurance because they don’t get sick, it is true that they are less apt to have need of comprehensive health care. Consequently, young and relatively physically fit employees often opt out of group health insurance coverage as an unnecessary expense.
Some are willing to risk getting hurt or becoming ill and go without any insurance. Others buy individual medical insurance policies with high deductibles, so they are covered for major health crises, and plan to pay from their own pockets for lesser medical needs.
Group health insurance is not
for everyone at every business place, but it remains a big player in the
pantheon of insurance options. That is likely to be the case for the
foreseeable future even though premiums are rising. Individuals are expected to
pay about 6 percent more for group policy coverage in 2012, somewhat less than
2011 but still a significant increase.
This will get more employees to musing about opting out of employee-provided coverage and buying policies on their own. Florida residents who choose to do so can find policies with premiums about a third as expensive as their group coverage. This can be a good choice, but only if the high-deductible policies chosen are backed by reputable and sound insurers and the individuals buying them are prepared to cover the cost of nagging and sometimes chronic health issues.
