Brain disorders in children linked to industrial chemicals, Splenda sweetener accused of deceptive marketing by sugar industry, and more consumer health news from NewsTarget

Industrial chemicals are causing a "silent pandemic" of brain disorders in one out of every six children, according to a new Harvard study published in The Lancet.

Researchers report that children who were exposed to toxic industrial chemicals such as mercury, lead, PCBs, toluene and arsenic during fetal development often show signs of attention deficit disorder, autism, cerebral palsy and other developmental delays later in life.

Also, the U.S. sugar industry has formally complained about the sucralose-based sweetener Splenda to the Federal Trade Commission, claiming the product is misrepresented to consumers as a "natural" product. Splenda is created by combining a sugar molecule with chlorine atoms and is marketed under the slogan "Tastes like sugar, because it's made from sugar." The U.S. Sugar Association says that this claim is misleading, demanding the marketing of Splenda be investigated in a letter to the FTC.
