House Democrats Reach Agreement on Proposals for Healthcare Reform

While U.S. President Barack Obama wanted both the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass a healthcare reform bills prior to the scheduled August recess he will have to settle for an agreement made by Democrats inside the House concerning proposals to reform the system.

That agreement has been a long time coming as Democrats have been split on the issue of healthcare reform in regards to the cost. Blue Dog Democrats, a group of financially conservative members within the party, balked at the idea of a $1 trillion bill and managed to trim $100 billion from that price tag before signing off on the agreement.

Details regarding the agreement have not been revealed but a public insurance option is believed to be worked into the bill. An actual vote on the bill won’t take place inside the House until September at the earliest and the Senate is still trying to craft a bill to vote on.

Once the House passes a bill and the Senate passes a bill members from both chambers will then try to create a unified bill before that bill is voted on by the House and Senate. If that bill passes it will then go before Obama who will sign it into law.

Earlier in the day Obama once again addressed the need for healthcare reform as he spoke before a town hall meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina. He told those gathered, “What we need, and what we will have when we pass these reforms, are health insurance consumer protections to make sure that those who have insurance are treated fairly and insurance companies are held accountable.”
