Michael Schumacher hasn’t raced in a grand prix since October 2006 but now the seven-time world champion will return to Formula 1 and drive for Ferrari following the injury of Felipe Massa at last week’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
Schumacher, 40, will mark his comeback at the European Grand Prix on August 23 and has said he will continue racing until Massa is able to return.
Massa suffered a fractured skull after he was struck in the helmet by a spring that came off another car. After losing consciousness Massa slammed his car into a barrier at nearly 160 mph and was rushed to a hospital where he is now expected to recover but could have lasting damage to his left eye.
With Massa out Schumacher, who captured five world titles for Ferrari, said he felt obligated under team loyalty to stand in. That feeling was echoed by Ferrari which released a statement announcing, “Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race.”
