Musician Greg Ham, best known for playing the flute, keyboards, saxophone and harmonica with the Grammy winning Australian band Men at Work, was found dead in his Melbourne home Thursday by two friends who became concerned after not hearing from him. No other details were released. The cause of death is unclear and is under investigation. Ham was 58.
"There are a number of unexplained aspects to it which has caused our attendance here today, and we're assisting the local detectives to determine what has occurred," Detective Senior Sergeant Shane O'Connell said.
"Because of the early stages of our investigation, we're not prepared to go into the exact details of what has occurred,” O'Connell added.
Ham joined Men at Work in 1979 and remained with the band until it split in 1986. He is perhaps best known for playing the flute in their 1981 hit Down Under. Other Men at Work hits include Who Can it be Now, Overkill and It’s a Mistake.
Men at Work’s 1981 album Business as Usual featured Down Under was a big success in Australia and the United States. The album put Men at Work on the map as the only Australian band to ever simultaneously have a number 1 album and number 1 single in the United States. In 1983, Men at Work won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Ham is survived by two children.
