NHL scores and highlights from Thursday night.
Nik Antropov scored two goals and Alexei Ponikarovsky had a goal and two assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs (10-5-3) handled the Boston Bruins (4-7-2) 6-4. The Maple Leafs jumped to a 4-0 lead with three goals coming in the first period. Brad Boyes and Patrice Bergeron each had two assists for the Bruins.
Erik Cole had a hat trick and Cam Ward stopped all 20 shots he faced in goal as the Carolina Hurricanes (8-6-3) pounded the Washington Capitols (6-5-4) 5-0. Scott Walker added a pair of assists for the Hurricanes.
The Philadelphia Flyers’ (3-11-1) season continued to go south as the lost to the NY Islanders (7-6-2) 3-1. Alexei Yashin had two goals for the Islanders while Rick DiPietro stopped 32 of 33 shots between the posts. Jason Blake assisted on two goals for the Islanders.
Martin Brodeur came up big for New Jersey (9-5-1) stopping 23 of 24 shots in regulation and didn’t allow a goal in the shootout as the Devils beat the Chicago Blackhawks (4-9-1) 2-1. Michael Rupp opened the scoring for the Devils in the first period and both Zach Parise and Brian Gionta found the back of the net in the shootout to secure the win.
Columbus (5-7-1) scored four goals in the second period, two by Rostislav Klesla and the Blue Jackets went on to beat the St. Louis Blues (4-7-3) 4-2. Dan Fritsche and Segei Federov each had a pair of assists for Columbus. Bill Guerin scored his eighth goal of the season for the Blues.
Marty Turco faced 13 shots and stopped them all as Dallas (12-4-0) found the back of the net once, off the stick of Brenden Morrow to beat the Phoenix Coyotes (4-11-0) 1-0. While Turco stopped a baker’s dozen, Coyotes goalie Curtis Joseph had to handle 35 shot attempts, stopping 34.
Anaheim (12-0-4) continued to roll through the first quarter of the season as the Ducks got two goals from Ryan Getzlaf and Shane O'Brien, Chris Kunitz, Samuel Pahlsson, and Chris Pronger each found the back of the net once as they easily handled the Vancouver Canucks (8-8-1) 6-0. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped all 20 shots he faced for the shutout.
San Jose (12-5-0) got a hat trick from Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo scored twice as the Sharks managed four goals in the first period to cruise past the Los Angeles Kings (5-10-3) 7-3. Milan Michalek and Patrick Rissmiller each had three assists for the Sharks.
