Draft89 Welcomes Toronto to Civilization with its New Show Islands

“A sci-fi comedy about the end of the world and what came after”

Draft89 is proud to present Islands, an original Canadian play by writer and director Graham Porter. Islands is a sci-fi comedy set five hundred years in the future and halfway around the world. The play premieres in Toronto on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Theatre Centre.

Islands takes the audience into the far future in order to ask some pressing, present-day questions. Are people entitled to their bad ideas? Are people free to relinquish their freedom? When the mob is at the gate, does it matter if they're right or wrong? When your opponent plays dirty, when do you climb down into the dirt with them? All this, plus holograms, radioactive sunflowers, anti-aging medicine and big hats will be on display in two-hour installments starting May 17, 2012.

In keeping with draft89’s mandate to collaborate with artists in a variety of mediums, Islands is set in the round and uses video, music and other effects to transport the audience to this strange future.

Writer/director Graham Porter is joined by the crew that brought you John/Yoko Bed Piece in 2009, including composer and editor Rick Talbot and set and costume designer Risha Yorke. Coupled with a first-class cast, Islands is a show unlike any you'll see this year.
