The Reverend Ike, who made millions from the donations of
his legions of followers, has died. A family spokesman says Rev. Ike, whose
real name is Frederick Eikerenkoetter, died Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital. The
cause of death was not released. He suffered a stroke in 2007 and never
recovered.
Rev. Ike had an estimated 2.5 million followers by the mid-1970s
when his ministry had reached its peak. His sermons, in which he asks followers
for cash donations, were carried on 1,770 radio stations.
He transformed the Loews movie theater in NYC to his
United Church of Living Institute. During his sermons, he instructed followers
of “close your eyes and see green…money up to your armpits, a roomful of money,
and there you are, just tossing around in it like a swimming pool” before
asking them to give him cash in exchange for his spiritual inspiration. He wanted
the donations in cash saying, “Change makes your minister nervous in the
service.”
Rev. Ike made millions of dollars from his church and
bought expensive clothes, jewelry, nice homes and exotic cars. He was often
called a con man.
He is survived by his wife and son.
