Iranian Police Clash with Mourners Gathered for Memorial to Those Killed in Post-Election Violence

Iranian police have clashed with thousands of mourners who had gathered near the grave of Neda Agha Soltan as part of a memorial to those killed during the country’s post-election violence.

Neda quickly became a symbol of the post-election violence when she was shot and killed on June 20 while in the streets of Tehran watching protests against poll results. Her death was filmed on a cell phone and seen by millions across the world, triggering strong reaction from the international community.

It was at her graveside that protesters opted to mark a memorial for all those killed during the demonstrations but police intervened, firing tear gas at the mourners in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Several mourners retaliated by throwing stones and chanting anti-government slogans.

Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi had attempted to stand with the mourners but police blocked access and forced him to leave. Mousavi has been an outspoken critic of the election results since it was declared that he was soundly beaten by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the polls.

Mousavi, along with several other leaders, claimed the vote was fraudulent yet the results were recognized by Iranian officials and Ahmadinejad will be officially approved for a second term on August 3.
