Nigerian security forces stormed a mosque in Maiduguri, killing several militants belonging to an Islamic sect blamed for a series of deadly attacks in the northern city.
According to army commander Major General Saleh Maina the deputy leader of Boko Haram was killed in the raid but the group’s leader, Mohammed Yusuf, managed to escape along with about 300 followers. Reports have indicated that at least 100 militants hiding out in the mosque were killed in Wednesday night’s battle.
Over the last four days militants belonging to Boko Haram attacked police stations and government buildings in several northern cities. Those attacks, coupled with Wednesday night’s counter-attack by the security forces, have left at least 300 dead.
Boko Haram has been attempting to overthrow the Nigerian government and impose a strict version of Islamic law.
