According to a report published by The New York Times Los Angeles Dodgers left-fielder Manny Ramirez and Boston Red Sox first-baseman/DH David Ortiz were among the 104 names included on a list of Major League Baseball players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.
That list has continued to reveal that some of the game’s biggest stars had been taking PEDs during their peak seasons. Among the players who have been linked to the 2003 testing are New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and former Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa.
The 2003 testing was carried out to determine whether or not Major League Baseball needed to implement a mandatory random drug testing policy. The results of that test were never meant to be published and those who tested positive were not penalized.
Ramirez and Ortiz were key members of Boston Red Sox teams that won World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. Ramirez recently came back from a 50-game suspension after violating the game’s drug policy fro testing positive for a banned female fertility drug.
