One day after a police barracks in northern Spain was destroyed in a bombing a second bomb targeting police detonated near a police barracks on the island of Majorca, killing two Civil Guard officers and leading authorities to shut down ports and airports in an attempt to isolate the attackers.
Government officials blamed the Basque separatist group ETA for Wednesday’s bombing that left 46 injured and the group is suspected in Thursday’s attack as well. The ETA, which will mark its 50th anniversary on Friday, has been fighting for an independent homeland in northern Spain and southern France.
Thursday’s blast occurred in a populated area and left several people injured in addition to the two officers killed. The bomb had been planted under the police car and it is believed the device was detonated by a remote when the officers entered the vehicle.
Shortly after the blast Spain’s Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba quickly pointed the finger of blame at the ETA saying, “We have always known that they are murderers and savages. Always.”
As authorities began to hunt for those suspected in the blast an order was issued to shut down all forms of transportation off the island. The airport was eventually reopened but officials did not say why the order had been reversed.
