Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of an Islamic sect suspected of carrying out several deadly attacks across northern Nigeria, has been killed while in police custody.
Yusuf was detained just hours after security forces carried out an attack Wednesday night on a mosque where hundreds of militant members of the Boko Haram were hiding. While more than 100 militants were killed in the attack Yusuf managed to escape but was eventually captured by authorities in the city of Maiduguri.
Police found Yusuf hiding in a goat pen at the home of his parents. At some point during his detention the Boko Haram leader was killed. His death was confirmed by a spokesman for the Maiduguri police who said “He has been killed. You can come and see his body at the state police command headquarters.”
Over the past four days more than 300 people were killed in attacks on police stations and government buildings in northeast Nigeria. Those attacks have been blamed on Boko Haram which has made it clear they aim to overthrow the government and impose a strict version of Islamic law.
