NHL scores and highlights from Friday night.

Ryan Smyth had two goals and Dwayne Roloson stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced as the Edmonton Oilers (8-7-1) handled the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-8-1) 4-1. Ales Hemsky and Joffrey Lupuland each added a goal for Edmonton. Anson Carter provided the lone goal for Columbus on a power play late in the second period.
 
Dominik Hasek stopped every shot he faced for the second consecutive game and Robert Lang put the Red Wings on the board in the first period as Detroit (11-4-1) skated past the Nashville Predators (9-4-1) 3-0 at Joe Louis Arena. Nicklas Lidstrom had a power play goal in the third and Daniel Cleary added an empty netter for Detroit. The Red Wings got 40 shots off against Nashville while the Predators could only manage 21 shots on goal.

Dany Heatly had two goals, Jason Spezza added a goal and two assists, and Chris Neil shoveled out two assists as the Ottawa Senators (6-8-1) beat the Pittsburgh Penguins (7-5-2) 6-3. Ottawa managed to attack the Penguins defense with 44 shots, a 27 sot advantage over Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist in the Penguins loss. The victory for Ottawa ended a five game winless drought.
 
New York (9-6-1) scored 15 seconds after the puck dropped and built up a 3-0 advantage in the first period against the Atlanta Thrashers (12-4-3). The Rangers 5-2 victory was highlighted by two goals from Michael Nylander and Brendan Shanahan added his 13th goal of the season. Jaromir Jagr posted three assists in the Rangers win. Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 14th goal of the year for Atlanta.
 
The Buffalo Sabres (13-1-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit against the Florida Panthers (6-7-4) and won in overtime 5-4. Thomas Vanek scored his second goal of the game 19 seconds into overtime to give the Sabres the win. Down 2-0 Buffalo rallied to score four unanswered goals but then let their own two goal lead slip away. Steve Montador’s first goal of the season tied the score at 4-4 and sent the teams into overtime. Adam Mair had two assists for the Sabres. Gary Roberts managed a goal and an assist for the Panthers. The Panthers spent 34 minutes in the penalty box compared to six minutes for Buffalo.

Radim Vrbata had two goals, both in the first period and Chicago (5-9-1) went ton to beat the St. Louis Blues (4-8-3) 3-1. Jeff Hamilton added two assists for the Blackhawks and Lee Stempniak scored the lone goal for the Blues. Sebastien Caron stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced for Chicago

The Calgary Flames (6-7-2) handed the Anaheim Ducks (12-1-4) their first loss in regulation this year 3-0. Calgary’s Miikka Kiprusoff was sensational in goal stopping all 37 shots he faced. The Flames got goals from Daymond Langkow, Tony Amonte, and Matthew Lombardi. Calgary’s win came despite the Flames only having 18 shots on goal for the night.
