After regulation time and two overtime periods couldn’t decide the MLS Cup champion, the Houston Dynamo and New England Revolution went to penalty kicks. When Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad stopped Jay Heaps’ bullet on New England’s fifth attempt the Dynamo celebrated their first championship in Houston.
For New England fans it was a hard pill to swallow. Taylor Twellman netted a goal in overtime and the Revolution were within minutes of hoisting the cup. With their fans chanting and anticipating an almost certain victory a sudden change in fortune sent Houston fans into a frenzy of hope and exaltation.
Brian Ching headed home Brian Mullan’s cross for the equalizing goal in the second extra frame and sent the game to penalty kicks.
Houston won 4-3 on penalty kicks, Ching was named MVP.
