In December 2011, the FDA announced that it would be looking into post-marketing reports of serious bleeds in Pradaxa users. While all anticoagulant therapies pose a risk of serious and fatal bleeding, the agency is working to determine whether reports of
Pradaxa bleeding events are occurring more often than should be expected. According to the FDA, a large clinical trial comparing Pradaxa and older blood thinner warfarin revealed major bleeding events which occurred at similar rates. It has been reported, however, that while the effects of warfarin can be reversed with a dose of Vitamin K, no such antidote exists for Pradaxa.
