Shia Mosques Targeted in Series of Car Bombings in Baghdad, at least 27 Killed

Five Shia mosques in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad were targeted in a string of car bombings that has left at least 27 people dead and more than 60 injured.

According to reports the six bombs detonated as worshippers were leaving the mosques following Friday prayers. Officials have already said they expect the death toll to rise significantly due to the time of day when the attacks occurred.

The deadliest blast took place at a mosque in the Shaab area of northern Baghdad where 21 people were killed and at least 30 were injured. Bombs struck mosques in eastern and southeastern areas of Baghdad as well.

It has been one month since U.S. troops exited Iraqi cities and while Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said the situation in Iraq has improved dramatically over the past three years there have been a number recent attacks that indicate the problems related to sectarian violence will remain.
