An American soldier died in Afghanistan this week in a shooting carried out by a man in an Afghan Army uniform. The United States military confirms the man “turned his weapon against coalition service members” near Kandahar late Wednesday. The shooter was killed at the scene by coalition forces.
The American soldier who died has not been identified. It is unclear if the shooter is a member of the Afghan National Army, or if he was an insurgent. The shooting is under investigation.
Eighteen foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan this year in similar incidents. Military officials are taking steps to prevent such attacks in the future. "They've (Afghan authorities) worked very closely within the national director of security to place counterintelligence operatives inside their schools, inside their recruiting centers, and inside the ranks, the idea being to spot and assess the potential emergence of an individual who could be an extremist or, in fact, a Taliban infiltrator," ISAF commander Gen. John Allen said last month, according to CNN.
