Suncoast Rehabilitation Center Believes Addiction Must Be Fully Handled Before A Proper Diagnosis Can Be Made.
Dual diagnosis is becoming synonymous with drug rehab but the results are questionable.
Although almost completely opposite, Dual Diagnosis and Drug Rehabilitation are two terms which are seeming to more and more become synonymous in the field of addiction as time passes. Many addicts are being diagnosed for mental disorder for things like Depression, ADHD, ADD, Anxiety, and even Schizophrenia. The sad part is that this is occurring more and more and often diagnosed while an individual is still not free of the effects of drug addiction which can lead, and often does, to misdiagnosis. And while it is the “goal” of most drug rehab programs to get people off of drugs, the exact opposite happens and the addicted person will actually be put on drugs to handle these “mental illnesses”. The problem is quite visible when you look at this approach and see that there are severe side effects and still, very low success rates associated with the dual diagnosis approach. “At Suncoast, it is our belief that it is impossible to accurately diagnose a potential dual disorder when drugs and alcohol create symptoms that in many cases are identical to the symptoms described by mental health professionals that indicate a dual disorder” said Eric Mitchell, President of Suncoast Rehabilitation Center in Spring Hill, FL. As a matter of fact, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a broad warning on antidepressants the warns of the risk of suicidal behavior and thought actually increasing in young adults which is the same cross section of people who seek out and occupy inpatient treatment centers, typically. And this stuff goes back a long way, all the way to the 1960’s. And in those past 50 years, there still is not a significant increase of success in dealing with addiction by using medications. But there are other answers out there and programs that are getting results—and getting them without using drugs to replace drugs. One of those programs is the Narconon program and was founded in the late 1960’s by a man named William Benitez. Benitez was a man who struggled with addiction for years and a lot of emotional distress on top of it. He was “hopelessly” addicted to heroin and sought out help in every direction he could. This included countless doctors and psychiatrists over a span of 19 years and nothing worked. He was evaluated, diagnosed, and medicated numerous times and still couldn’t find the answers he was looking for and eventually ended up in prison in Arizona due to his addiction. It was while he was in prison that he had a realization and told himself, “we [addicts] in prison were in the same boat. We didn’t know what the problem was.” It was at this point in his life that Mr. Benitez found the “answer” he was looking for. He read a book by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard and finally stumbled upon the answer he was looking for. Through this text on self-exploration, Benitez was finally able to find the reasons why he used drugs for all those years by finding out about himself. He did this and once and for all got off of drugs without any kind of medication or other drug. The idea is actually a pretty simple one and hits right on the definition of the word rehabilitation; to restore to a former state. Benitez discovered that for someone to be rehabilitated one should improve their own abilities as a person and use those to free themselves of the trap of drugs and addiction. He took those principles and got himself off of drugs using only his own abilities and then formed what is known now as the Narconon Drug Rehabilitation Methodology which is the methodology used at Suncoast Rehabilitation Center in Spring Hill, Florida. The term Narconon is derived from Greek and literally means, NO DRUGS. Through the use of a sauna detoxification program and life skills therapy geared toward restoring an individual’s ability, the Narconon program has been succeeding at an over 70 % success rate for over 40 years at rehabilitating those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The Suncoast Rehabilitation program addresses all different types of addictions, and not only looks to get those suffering due to addiction off of drugs, but back to being able, capable, ethical and productive members of society. What it doesn’t do is put them on more drugs or replaces one drug for another. If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction that has been misdiagnosed due to emotional distress caused by substance abuse issues, get more information on an effective way to treat them without the use of more drugs.
