South African Municipal Workers End Week-Long Strike

The week-long strike that paralyzed services across South Africa has ended following an agreement between the government and the South African Municipal Workers’ Union.

Nearly 150,000 municipal workers launched the strike after demands for a pay raise were denied when President Jacob Zuma determined an increase in state spending was not plausible during the country’s current recession.

That decision was reversed on Friday as workers were given a 13% raise, nearly double the 7% rate of inflation. According to the SAMWU the workers will return to their jobs on Monday, ending a week in which trash was not collected, bus services were not running and local police forces were not working.
