The Boston Red Sox landed the biggest bat on Friday, acquiring Cleveland Indians catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez in exchange for starting pitcher Justin Masterson and minor league pitchers Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price.
Martinez adds a significant amount of pop to the Red Sox line-up as the All-Star slammed 15 home runs and had 67 RBIs while hitting .287 for the Indians. He will split time with Jason Varitek behind the plate and fill in for Kevin Youkilis at first or act as the DH.
Boston could afford to deal Masterson as they boast one of the deepest rotations in baseball and while Hagadone and Price were young prospects they didn’t appear to fit into the Red Sox future rotation.
