A British Red Cross worker kidnapped in southwest Pakistan earlier this year has been found dead. A spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed 60-year-old Khalil Rasjed Dale was beheaded. His body was found Sunday in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, and his death appears to be recent.
"It was a brutal murder that has left us appalled,” said ICRC spokesman Sean Maguire.
“We have called upon the Pakistani authorities to conduct a full and immediate investigation into the murder,” he added. “We are not going to talk about who may or may not be responsible for the killing.”
Quetta police chief Ahsan Mahboob said Dale’s killers left a note on his body that read: “This is the body of Khalil who we have slaughtered for not paying a ransom."
Dale, who previously did humanitarian work in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq, was running a health program in Quetta at the time of his abduction in January. Gunman snatched him from an ICRC vehicle as he returned home from work. His driver was released unharmed.
British Prime Minister David Cameron called Dale’s murder a “shocking and merciless act.” "Khalil Dale has dedicated many years of his life to helping some of the most vulnerable people in the world and my thoughts today are with his friends and family,” Cameron added.
