Famed Bollywood director Ravi Chopra will undertake a massive project when he begins filming a six-hour movie based on the Hindu epic Mahabharat.
Mahabharat will become the longest film in Bollywood history but Chopra plans on splitting the film into two segments.
Mahabharat is the story of a struggle within a dynasty for the throne of Hastinapura. The battle is waged between the Kauravas, the elder branch of the Kuru clan and the Pandavas, the younger branch of the Kuru clan. In the Great battle of Kurukshetra it is Pandavas that comes out victorious.
It is reported that the film will cost $32.6 million to produce.
Chopra’s father, B.H. Chopra directed the TV series based on the same story in the late 1980’s in India. It was well received in the UK as well, gathering a huge audience from its BBC airing.
Ravi Chopra has promised to put an up-to-date look to the epic, with help from Hollywood saying, “We are going to get a special effects team from Hollywood and the movie will have an international look so that we can market it abroad also.”
