Venezuela’s National Assembly has passed a new election law that will allow the National Election Council to redraw voting district boundaries, a move that will likely favor President Hugo Chavez and his party in next year’s election.
Opponents of the measure have said the new law will prevent other parties from gaining seats in the National Assembly. The new district boundaries would shift those loyal to Chavez’s United Socialist Party (PSUV) into areas that had been opposition strongholds. That shift would then give the PSUV a greater chance of securing more votes in the election.
Despite the opposition concern supporters of Chavez have said the new district boundaries were needed to better reflect the changing politics of the country.
