U.S. Nationals Detained by Iranian Guards after Illegally Crossing Border

Three U.S. nationals have been detained by Iranian security guards after they illegally crossed the border from Iraq into the country.

According to reports two men and a woman, described as tourists, had been hiking in the Kurdish region of Iraq when they crossed into Iran. Once in Iran the three were arrested by guards, an act that has been confirmed by Iranian media.

The three had arrived in the tourist resort of Ahmad Awa on Thursday and embarked on a hike that eventually placed them on Iranian soil. Following news of the arrest the U.S. embassy in Baghdad launched an investigation into the matter.
