Corazon Aquino, the former President of the Philippines, has died at the age of 76 after a lengthy battle with colon cancer. News of Aquino’s death was followed by a declaration by current President Gloria Arroyo that the Philippines would honor the former leader with ten days of mourning.
Aquino became Asia’s first female president when she won election in 1986, unseating the strong-armed Ferdinand Marcos in a revolutionary vote. Aquino’s reign quickly replaced the corruption of Marcos with a return to democracy.
Aquino’s body will now lie in state at the De La Salle Catholic school in Manila from Saturday evening to Monday morning and she will be buried beside her husband, former political leader Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, at Manila Memorial Park on Wednesday.
Corazon Aquino became a major political figure following the murder of her husband as he prepared to run for president.
