Felix Brinkmann, who survived Nazi concentration camps
during the Holocaust, was found beaten and strangled in his Upper East Side apartment Thursday.
Brinkmann, 90, was found by the apartment building’s superintendent lying face
down in his bedroom with his hands bound. His body showed blunt force trauma
wounds. There were no signs of forced entry.
Brinkmann’s blue 2009 Honda Civic was stolen
and a safe in his apartment tampered with. His son Rick Brinkman, who spells
his last name differently, feels the murder was random. “Anybody who knew him
really liked him. He was not the kind of guy who had enemies,” he says.
Police are looking for a man and a woman in connection
with the killing. No other details on the suspects were available.
Brinkmann survived the Nazis’s Mauthausen, Ebensee and
Auschwitz concentration camps. He had been slated to die in the gas chambers
five times, but each time escaped death by talking his way out.
After WWII ended, Brinkmann discovered that his wife had
also survived the camps. They immigrated to America where Brinkmann opened bars
and nightclubs. He later became a real estate manager.
