NHL scores and highlights from Monday night
The Buffalo Sabres (15-1-1) remained perfect on the road after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes (9-7-3) 7-4. Buffalo, now 10-0 on the road, jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first period then gave up three goals to Carolina before scoring four third period goals. Derek Roy scored a goal and had two assists for the Sabres while Thomas Vanek scored a goal and added an assist and Jason Pominville netted his 12th goal of the year. Rod Brind'Amour had a goal and an assist for Carolina.
Guillaume Latendresse scored a pair of power play goals in the third period to help Montreal (9-4-3) beat the Ottawa Senators (6-10-1) 6-3. Andrei Markov had a pair of assists and Mike Johnson had a goal and an assist in the Canadiens win. Daniel Alfredsson had two assists for the Senators.
Philadelphia (3-12-2) lost for the sixth straight time, falling 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins (8-6-2). Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist and the Penguins out shot the Flyers 39-25. Evgeni Malkingave gave the Penguins the game-winning goal with 2:00 minutes remaining in the third period.
Olaf Kolzig stopped 44 of the 45 shots he faced as the Washington Capitals (8-5-4) made the most of their 27 shots to defeat the Florida Panthers (6-9-4) 4-1. Kolzig was battered by 20 shots in the third period but didn’t allow any to get past him. Alexander Ovechkin paced the Capitals with a goal and an assist and Chris Clark had a pair of assists.
Ryan Smyth scored two second period goals for Edmonton (9-8-1) and it was enough for the Oilers to defeat the Colorado Avalanche (7-8-2) 2-1. Smyth scored a power play goal and then came back with a shorthanded goal for Edmonton. Milan Hejduk scored the lone goal for the Avalanche. Dwayne Roloson stopped 33 of the 34 shots for the Oilers.
Dustin Brown scored the go ahead goal with just under four minutes remaining in the third period and the Los Angeles Kings (6-10-4) came back to beat the San Jose Sharks (13-6-0) 4-2. Los Angeles fell behind in the first period when Milan Michalek scored for the Sharks. The Kings then equalized with a goal from Alexander Frolov. Joe Thorton gave the Sharks the lead in the first minute of the third period but Lubomir Visnovsky scored three minutes later to tie the score. Brown then found the back of the net for the Kings at 16:50 of the third period. Frolov added an empty netter to cap the scoring.
