Severe turbulence shook Continental airlines Flight 128 Monday
as it traveled from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Houston, Texas. Dozens of
passengers were injured, 4 of them seriously, forcing the Boeing 767 to divert
to Miami, Florida.
The aircraft was carrying 168 passengers and 11 crew
members when it hit turbulence about 50 miles from the Dominican Republic at
about 38,000 feet. It landed at Miami International Airport an hour later at
5:35 a.m. Ambulances and other emergency crews were lined up on the runway to
treat the injured and help transport the passengers.
At least 28 passengers were treated at the scenes and 9
were transported to nearby hospitals. 4 were seriously injured. The injuries
included bumps, bruises, neck pain and back pain.
