Gunmen Kill 34 At Nigerian Cattle Market

Over two dozen people died Wednesday evening in northern Nigeria when gunmen attacked a cattle market with assault rifles and grenades. Police believe the attack was retaliation for the killing of a robber earlier in the day.

According to officials, two robbers attempted to steal cattle from the market in Potiskum, Yobe state, but traders caught one of the men and beat him to death. A gang of armed men returned to the market later in the day and opened fire.

"They threw explosives and shot indiscriminately, setting fire to the market, killing lots of livestock and wounding many people, mostly cattle dealers,” police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin told the AFP.

Thirty-four people died and at least 30 others were wounded. The attack is under investigation. No suspects have been arrested.
