Police in Mexico say three of the four dismembered bodies found Thursday in Veracruz state are those of crime reporters Guillermo Luna Varela, Gabriel Huge and Esteban Rodríguez Rodríguez. The fourth body is that of Varela’s girlfriend, Irasema Becerra. Luna Varela and Huge were reported missing by their families on Wednesday. It is unclear when Rodriquez and Becerra went missing.
The bodies were found in four trash bags in the Zamorana Canal in Boca del Rio. The office of attorney general Felipe Amadeo Flores Espinosa said the victims showed signs of torture. "By the characteristics of the crime, one presumes that organized crime was involved in the commission of these homicides," the attorney general's office added.
No other details on the case have been released. Thursday’s discovery comes less than a week after the murder of Veracruz journalist Regina Martinez. Martinez was strangled to death in her Xalapa home. She reported for Proceso magazine.
