In one of the most expansive ballots in memory and no clear cut winner in site, the NL Cy Young Award was bestowed upon Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America gave the nod to Webb for his 16-8 record along with a 3.10 ERA.
With 15 of the 32 first-place votes Webb received 103 points in the balloting, beating out San Diego’s reliever Trevor Hoffman. The Padres closer collected 12 first-place votes to finish with 77 points.
The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter finished third in the balloting. The St. Louis Cardinals go-to guy received two first-place votes and finished with 63 points. Roy Oswalt of the Houston Astros collected the remaining three first-place votes and finished fourth in the voting.
