The Florida Gators can rest easy after locking up head football coach Urban Meyer for the next six years in a deal worth $24 million, making him the highest paid SEC coach in 2009.
Meyer, who had been under contract through 2012, has been with the Gators for four years and has led the team to two national championships and a 44-9 record. That record includes an impressive 12-1 mark against Florida State, Georgia, Miami and Tennessee.
Under the old deal Meyer was being paid $3.25 million a season. The new deal will inch Meyer past Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban who is set to earn $3.9 million in 2009 and LSU Tigers head coach Les Miles who is due to earn $3.75 million.
Pete Carroll is the highest paid college football coach at $4.4 million.
